Los autores de los ensayos que aparecen en este volumen buscan un modelo del cambio religioso que permita comprender los contactos históricos contingentes entre sociedades distintas, sobre todo ante una situación de dominio de una sociedad frente a otra. Su esfuerzo se orienta hacia la identificación de la variedad de elementos implicados en tales contactos y hacia la explicación de cómo sus efectos permean y modifican las instituciones y los valores religiosos de las sociedades. Los ensayos se refieren a varios casos históricos, en particular la penetración del islam en el Medio Oriente, la India e Indonesia, y la penetración del cristianismo en Filipinas y México. Tomados en conjunto, los ensayos sugieren una serie de determinantes generales que ayudan a entender por qué el cambio religioso es rápido y relativamente radical en algunos casos -los que se agrupan bajo el rubro de la conversión- y más lento y parcial en otros -los agrupados bajo el rubro del sincretismo.
